Tadarito, a former health care worker who has suffered multiple strokes, has been prescribed Viagra (generic Viagra) to aid in his recovery from heart failure. The condition has prompted many to question the drug’s long-term usefulness and, after a four-year trial of it showed no significant difference to placebo, doctors prescribed the drug for a few months in hopes of improving its efficacy.
The drug, marketed as a treatment for angina, was initially discovered in the 1970s. It was only approved by the FDA in 1998 and is still widely prescribed. But after a decade of research and trials, it was finally approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Nov. 3.
In 2007, it was discovered that a blood thinner, sildenafil citrate, had anti-platelet activity, which is the active ingredient in Viagra.

But he noted that while Viagra can help with angina, its use in these patients should not cause the same level of pain or discomfort as that used by patients who take nitrates.
The drug’s effectiveness in helping people with angina had not been studied in those with heart-related problems. “There is a lot of confusion surrounding the use of sildenafil citrate in the treatment of angina,” Smith said. “The way Viagra works is that it dilates the blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the heart.
